What is a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN)?
Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN): Quick Overview
An employer/buyer who is required to file an information return with the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) must obtain the correct Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) from the employee or service provider to report any income paid to the employee.
If the buyer requests the 1099 service on an Elance project (1099 project), then Elance is required to collect the TIN from the provider so the applicable tax forms may be issued by Elance on behalf of the buyer. To collect this information, Elance will request the provider to fill out and submit (online submittal and signed copy) the W-9 Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification.
